In November and December 1996 Intomart conducted a national ‘God in the Netherlands’ survey (GiN) of Dutch attitudes to ideology and the church, commissioned by KRO, a Catholic broadcasting association. The main results were published in 1997 in a study entitled God in Mderland 1966–1996 (Dekker et al. 1997). The random sample of the GiN-survey was drawn from the database of the Time Budget Survey (TBS) conducted by Intomart in October 1995 among 3,227 respondents aged 12 and over. For the KRO survey 1,313 people aged 17 or over who had indicated in the TBS that they would be willing to take part in a follow-up were interviewed.

In this chapter the analyses refer only to respondents aged 18 or over. This equates to 2,849 individuals in the TBS, 1,249 (44 per cent) of whom also took part in the later GiN survey. It was possible to link up the data pertaining to 1,110 respondents in both surveys in a combined database. This equates to 39 per cent of the TBS respondents. There was thus a considerable decline in the number of respondents, and it seems likely that those who dropped out were the less interested members of the group. Indeed, the GiN survey did produce a substantially higher proportion of voluntary workers than recorded in the questionnaire used for the TBS. However, the level of non-response is not crucial to the central theme of this chapter. We are concerned not with the entire population but with comparisons between different denominations, analysing the data on each individual group. The databases differ slightly in terms of church membership, denomination and frequency of church attendance. Differences between the different groups are not, therefore, generated by the different sampling methods.
